GS-4 No. 4449 was born in the SP's Sacramento Shops in 1941, one of 100 locomotives in the GS-4 class. She was designed to haul heavy freight trains over the steep grades of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and she quickly earned a reputation as one of the most powerful and reliable locomotives in the SP fleet.
